Pulp Modern Submissions

Pulp Modern publishes two issues a year.

Pulp Modern is a fiction journal that publishes crime, noir, fantasy, science fiction, horror, adventure, war, and westerns. Absolutely NO SUBJECT is taboo. Pulp Modern believes in true and absolute freedom of speech.

How long should the story length/word count be?
Stories should be between 3500 and 5000 words. That word count is STRICTLY ENFORCED. At this time, there will be no serializations unless requested by the editor.
When is the next submission window?
PULP MODERN IS CLOSED TO SUBMISSIONS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
How much does Pulp Modern pay for stories?
Pulp Modern will compensate writers a flat rate of twenty-five dollars (U.S.) per story (I understand this isn’t a professional rate and I apologize. Right now, this money comes from my pocket and my pocket just isn’t that deep).

Story Eligibility

What Serial Rights does Pulp Modern Claim for stories eligible for publication?
Pulp Modern claims the following publication rights: First English-language Rights, English-language Periodical Rights, World Periodical Rights, and Electronic Distribution Rights. All rights will revert back to the writer six months after initial publication. Should Pulp Modern choose to create an anthology of previously published work, new rights will be negotiated.
Does Pulp Modern consider simultaneous submissions?
Pulp Modern will NOT CONSIDER simultaneous submissions.
Does Pulp Modern accept multiple story submissions?
No, we do not accept multiple submissions by the same author during a submission window. Please send one (1) story only.
Does Pulp Modern accept reprints of stories previously published elsewhere?
Pulp Modern will not publish reprints unless they are requested by the editor.
What type of stories does Pulp Modern feature?
Pulp modern publishes unapologetic crime, noir, fantasy, science fiction, horror, adventure, war, and westerns. Please read our past features and stories first to familiarize yourself with what we and our readers like.
Can I submit someone else's work on their behalf to Pulp Modern?
No. Pulp Modern only accepts original work submitted by the author that initially wrote, created, and subsequently owns the story. Submitting other people’s work is plagiarism and violates a host of intellectual property laws and copyrights.

Sending Your Work

Do you require a cover letter and a biography with submissions?
Yes. All submissions should include a cover letter in the body of the email as well as a brief biography of 300 words or less.
So what else do I have to do to send my story to Pulp Modern?
Send your story in standard manuscript format as an attached document (.doc or .rtf) in Times New Roman 12pt to therealpulpmodern@gmail.com.

Please write “Fiction Submission,” the genre your story falls under, and the title of the story in the subject line.

Can I submit a story to Pulp Modern via snail mail or stage coach?
No. Pulp Modern exclusively accepts digital submissions via email only.
How long before I find out if my story was accepted for Pulp Modern?
Please allow a month or two to hear back after the close of the submission window as we get hundreds of submissions. We read everything submitted and don’t want to rush the process.
